Words of Wisdom 10/8/14
“Listen, my son [and daughter], to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.”
(Proverbs 1:8-9, The Bible, New International Version)
What do you think about what I just shared with you? Have you ever considered that your parent’s instructions could actually be valuable? So valuable, in fact, that the author of this proverb likened them to precious jewelry?
I think that most of us take our parent’s words at face value – warnings not to buy a too expensive car, unsolicited advice regarding our chosen partners, observations about our risky business decisions. We hear them but we don’t really listen to them…until we’re sitting with our heads in our hands wondering what the heck just happened.
Stephen Covey is credited with saying, “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.”
Today, talk to your parents. It doesn’t matter if you live with them or 5 hours away from them – chat them up, no text messages…ask them for some advice and just listen. Listen with the intent to understand them, to gain wisdom, to adorn yourself with some gems of insight. Let them speak wisdom into your life. They know you, they love you…let them be a part of whatever it is you are going through right now.
