I was talking to a friend the other day about my new project – my husband and I are turning our family room into a den/office space. Each of our three children will have their own space, my husband will have his desk in there, but mostly, the space will be for my office.
So, when it comes to the design of the space, it’s all up to me!
I will share progress in later posts, but for now, I wanted to share with you two things that I am planning to have in my office. Two things that I will not compromise on. These two things will be part of the design of this space:
1. Greenery. Plants! Lovely, luscious, life-giving, happy, healthy plants!
There are a few reasons why these items are non-negotiable in my office space.
When it comes to plants, they detoxify the air in your home and are great for any space in which you spend an abundance of time. I am in my home office for at least eight hours per day. The air often gets stale, but having living, breathing plants in your space can refresh the whole room. Not just because they breathe, but because they are green and vibrant and beautiful…and add beauty no matter what your decor.
Here are some proper, Feng Shui, uses of plants:
Consider the leaves: pointed leaves are more Yang and move Chi quickly. Don’t use prickly plants in small rooms, people will feel uncomfortable and irritable, but feel free to add some prickly plants to the fame sector of your room (far middle section). Round, floppy leaves are more Yin and will calm your space.
Bamboo is considered lucky in Feng Shui because it is thought to bring a peaceful and wise energy to the home, it teaches us how to be flexible and open so that the Chi can flow and heal your being. The number of bamboo stalks is important and represents different aspects:
3 for Happiness
5 for Health
2 for Love and Marriage
8 for Wealth and Abundance
9 for Good Fortune

Candles are warming and can bring new energy into a room. They represent fire and will enliven a particularly colorless room and inspire your creativity. You can balance your candles with your plants and perhaps a water feature to balance the room.
I also like to watch the flame flicker to help me re-center myself and focus my energy. Candles also provide beautiful lighting to darker areas of the room and can add delicious smells to your room. One thing I have learned about fragrance – do not put food-scented candles in the office unless you want to gain a bunch of weight!
My very favorite candles of all time are Paddywax candles. Here is my current obsession:
