Fourth of July Safety Tips

It’s almost the Fourth of July and families all over the country are planning their Independence Day festivities. According to a new report from the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission, approximately 200 injuries are reported daily in the month of July related to fireworks. If fireworks are part of your family’s plans, please make sure to follow some simple safety rules.

  • Fireworks should only be used under strict adult supervision. They should never be handled by children under any circumstance.
  • Make sure that instructions on labels are read and adhered to.
  • Fireworks should only be used outdoors, away from buildings, and away from any items that could potentially catch fire.
  • Do not light multiple fireworks at once. One firework should be lit at a time.
  • Keep water and a fire extinguisher handy should you need to use them.
  • Put fireworks that have been used into a bucket of water to soak for an hour before getting rid of them.

You should also note the following legalities of fireworks.

The following fireworks are now legal in the state of Georgia:

  • Wire or wood sparklers that contain less than 100 grams of explosives.
  • Sparkling items , non-aerial, with 75 grams or less
  • Snakes and glow worms
  • Noise makers of less than .25 grams explosive mixture.

Also note that the sale and use of most fireworks are illegal in the state of Georgia and punishable by a fine and jail time.

You can avoid running into any of these issues by opting to watch fireworks at one of several locations in and around Gwinnett County. The Mall of Georgia and Stone Mountain are just a couple of places that offer a full fireworks show with added entertainment such as the laser show at Stone Mountain and music at Mall of Georgia.

However you choose to spend the Fourth of July holiday, make it fun and safe!
