Military personnel know better than anyone how difficult it is to be away from family. For months at a time Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen, National Guardsmen and Coast Guardsmen are sent away from their families. And whether you have children of your own or not, it is hard as h-e-double-hockey-sticks to be away from your family for that long.
A Minnesota-based organization recently did something pretty awesome for our National Guardsmen: they held an “intercontinental steak dinner.” Yup. The organization, Serving Our Troops, sent 13,000 steaks to Kuwait for service members over there, while their families were simultaneously served steak dinner over here. Military members were reunited with their families via Skype, to help relieve the pain of separation.
While I was deployed to Iraq, my Grandmother, who helped raise me, passed away and my Mom endured one of the toughest hurricane seasons in recent history. I received news of my Grandmother’s death via email and tuned in helplessly to CNN to watch the procession of violent storms slamming my Mom’s “neck of the woods.”
I would not wish that experience on my worst enemy, much less my best friend. Yet most of us run about our day as if we will always have our family and other loved ones with us.
At Inside Out, we hope to instill our members with a sense of passion and desire to love deeply and wholly each and every day. We want to rid society of the need to rush about. And we want to inspire people to bring family back into focus.
We hope you’ll join us and spread the word.
